Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mom in both of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. She was not allowed to perform in front of her family until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the strain it might cause. Perry was a shy teenager and was not a performer. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry went to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led the actress back to California which is where she discovered theatre jobs. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC drama The Family, in 2016. In 2017 she had her own recurring part on the ABC political thriller Scandal with her father. She also played the younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was selected through an audition, even having a strong connection with it.
